The Committee on Race Relations and the MLK Celebration Committee are now the Committee on Race and Diversity (CRD)! Professor J. Phillip Thompson is serving as the CRD chair.
The CCRR Grants Subcommittee just finished its last round of funding. The subcommittee reviews grants and a list of the most recently funded grants can be found here: http://mit.edu/ccrr/grants/history.html.
Tell us what you think about race relations and diversity on the MIT Campus…
Come and celebrate the launch of our new website on Thursday November 30! Members of the CCRR will be there and Professor John Maeda, chair of the CCRR, will make remarks about the committee’s charge and its work moving forward. The celebration is open to members of the MIT community and will take place in the Bush Room at 5:30pm. For more information please contact Lily Burns: lub[at]mit[dot]edu or 617.253.1706.
We hope to see you there!
One of the odd things about contemporary American culture is how often the way in which we talk about “race” has a great deal about class hidden inside. America, of course, is supposed to be the land of equal opportunity. And perhaps because of this self-conception, many of the injustices (and even prejudices) that flow from economic conditions are folded into perceptions about race.
Without an ongoing discussion regarding race relations on campus, there can be no hope for developing a common understanding of our important differences and similarities. CCRR is just one of the many teams of extraordinary students, staff, and faculty at MIT working towards leveraging the benefits of a vibrantly diverse campus.
